Engine ticking noise S70 1998

Need some advice here. I have a 98 GLT w/ 106K miles on the odo. I have had a ticking noise (sounds like a lifter possibly) that only happens 1)when I am driving at low speeds less than 20MPH. 2) sitting at stop light etc. It doesn't do it when I first start the car only when it is at operating temp. I change the oil every 2500 - 3000 miles deligently. The motor only burns about a half quart between oil changes. My independant volvo mechanic has basically said don't worry. The only suggestion to fix the obvious problem was to burn some trans fluid because it has detergent.

Please provide your comments or suggestions.

    Have the oil pressure checked at idle. That will put your mind at ease.
    Measured with oil at 212 deg F. (10-15 minutes driving from cold)
    Spec is at 800-850 rpm 14 PSI minimum
    at 4000 rpm 49.8 PSI minimum

      Thanks Larry. Since you mentioned oil pressure I know if I rev the motor and keep the "R"'s up the ticking will go away when at idle for a little while. This makes sense that it is a oil pressure issue. Would I potentially have to replace the pump?

        IF you have a pressure problem, it is most likely an O-ring inside the pan which needs replacement, not the oil pump.

          My 98 S70 has had the "ticking" noise for a while now. I have 130,000 miles and change my oil every 5000 to 8000 miles. My Volvo mechanic told me this could be a result of noisy injectors???!!!???

          Regarless, the noise seems to only happen in colder weathers.

          My suggestion if your car mechanice says its normal then dont worry about it.

          My personal opinion (owning 2 volvos) each one has their own peculiarities! My 96 850 GLT (same motor as the S70) ate a lot more oil withouth any leaks.

            The OEM lifters are proned to make noise with these kind of miles. I would recomend when you change your next T belt to throw in a set of new lifters..... They are expensive at $22.00 each, X 20. But they are almost there when the belt and tensioner go in. (I had a set repolished and checked by aluminum head rebuilders, and they are a CHEAP alternative to new ones, as well....) If they do go bad, they loose their resistance against the cam, and you will have some slop generated..... I have seen bad lifters go 50,000 miles with little loss of performance, etc...

              thanks for the info. I guess if I have the mech. tear down the engine I would prob. just get rid of the car. I guess with the milage and the car being almost 7yrs old it isn't worth it. I am going to first start with the oil pressure issue and go from their.
