'ABS' and 'TRAC OFF' lights on after brake job V70-XC70 1998

I just put new pads front and back on my 1998 XC. Now the ABS and TRAC OFF lights have come off and wont go back. I didn't unhook anything electrical or noticably break anything, so I am confused. Standard stuff: Opened master cylinder cap, took off wheel, took off caliper, pushed in piston, replaced pad, reassemble, repeat, close MC cap. The brakes seem to work great, but that light won't go off. Any ideas?

Check the connector to each of the wheel speed sensors, make sure none of them got disconnected or the wiring damaged.
Make sure the speed signal generator ring of one of the wheels did not get damaged.

On the other hand, your ABS Control Unit is at the right (or wrong) age for failure. All of them will eventually fail after they reach 80,000 miles or 5 years.
Reading the ABS codes costs about $125.00 at the dealer and about 95% of the time, the diagnosis is a defective ABS Control Unit.

Here's information I have on this subject.

I am in process of experiencing the same problem -- [ABS]& [Tarc off] warning lights on, the garabge said it is the ABS controller and it will cost about $600 to replace. (Our car is a 1998 XC with 108,000).
Now here is the interesting part -- our mechanic said to hold on to the reciept for the repairs because he has hear rumors that Volvo will be forced into a recall on this part because of it's pattern of failure.
Has anyone else heard about this?

      David

If reading codes costs $125 at the dealer this software should pay for itself fairly quickly:
