What is the procrdure to add R134? 850 1997

I have a low level of R134 and want to add some. I have never done this before. Is it relatively easy? Thanks... I found a manifold and R134 at Big lots for $18.. Will this help?

Unless it is empty, no pressure, never add more than one can at a time. Go to an auto parts store and look for a can of CLIPLIGHT, it will seal nicely. Get a good gauge that's builtin to the filler tube, it's easier that way.
The sticker on the pass side strut housing says .75 Kg of coolant, that is 26.4 oz. The maximum you should have in the system is 29 oz (for cold markets - Europe).

Very easy to do. The low pressure nozzle is under the DTC boxes infront of the computer box next to the drive belt. The car must be running and the AC on to add r134a - watch your knuckles.

Buy a kit at a Kmart or Wall Mart that has a sealer, oil, 134a and a guage. Follow the directions on the kit. They sell for about $25. If your system is not cooling, then you probably have a leak. The kit may help if it's a small leak. The guage will tell you how much 134a to add. More is not better. There should be a decal under your hood that tells you the pressure your car needs. The hose on the cans can only fit the low pressure side of your system.
Follow the directions and good luck.

I'm going to do mine today as well...but I am a little unclear on the exact steps.

        Do you:

        1. Connect the can
        2. Start car and a/c
        3. connect to fitting on car
        4. turn screw to tap can ??????

        then what...

        5. turn off car, then remove equipment???? or ????

First I would connect the hose to the low pressure fitting before starting the car. This is close to the serpentine belt and it's easy to get hurt while the car is running. Have your can already screwed to the valve on your hose with the valve all the way counter clockwise.

Start the car and turn on your A/C full blast but not on recirculate

Screw the valve in, puncturing the can.

Unscrew the valve. The can should be getting cold and refridgerant flowing into your system. You shold start seeing the gausge increasing in pressure and fluctuating as the compressor cycles on and off.

My gauge is idiot proof, having red, yellow and green colors associated with the pressure values on it. These are nice indicators. If you are going to buy one -- look for this feature- it's easier to read the pressure range when the compresor is cycling.

If you want to get more technical, you can buy a dial thermometer and place it in the center vents on your dash to see how cool the air is getting. A nicely charged system should yield around 38degF vent temperature on full blast with an outside ambient temperature of 82degF.

If the can you are using is getting lighter and you notice a frost ring around the botom of of it, it's almost empty. Shake the can a bit and turn it upside down while charging to get the remainder out and to allow the oil in the can to get into the system. I usually shake the can as soon as I start charging the system just out of habit.

When you are satisfied with the temperature and the system has the proper pressure, turn the valve fully counterclockwise. This stops the flow in and out. Turn off the car and discunnect the hose from your low pressure fitting. replace the plastic cpa and you are good to go.

          Good luck

            Hi Brap!

You seem to know alot about the AC in the 850's. Hope you can answer my question.

My AC was running cool to hot. I was told that it needed freon. I took it to my shop and they added it. The AC ran great for one day. Now, when I turn it on, I only get slightly cool air. Could there be a leak? If so, can I buy one of those sealer kits at Walmart? Do these kits come with the freon also?

Any info will be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much for your time!

            Laurie
