how do i know if 850 is GLT? 850

I just bought a 97 850 wagon. It looks like what was called in previous years the GLT--fancy alloys, moonroof, power drivers' seat and so forth. But it is not a turbo. Were all 97 850 GLT's turbo's? Were they labelled "GLT" on the tailgate? How did the GLT designation change over the 850 years?

According to the ConsumerGuide web page, GLT came standard w/ turbo only in 1997 -- in all previous years, the turbo option was independent of the GLT package. I don't know if you could get Turbo w/o the GLT package in 1997, but that is likely.

It's in your VIN:

YV1 = Volvo
LX = station wagon
next two numbers = engine type:
55 = B5254S
56 = B5254T
57 = B5234T
58 = B5234T5

There should be a V for 1997 before the chassis number

I have a 1997 805 GLT Turbo Wagon. It has 850GLT on the tailgate. I was told by a friend (a BMW mechanic) that GLT stands for "Grand Luxury Touring" and doesn't definately mean Turbo. I have yet to be able to clarify this.

While "GLT" may in fact mean "Grand Luxury Touring" your mechanic should have realized by now that you have a light pressure turbo under the hood. All '97 GLT models came with a light pressure turbo, not the same as the high pressure turbo found in the "Turbo" models.
