Torn CV boot, slight thunk from stop, related? 850 1995

While replacing the pads & rotors on the front of the '95 855t yesterday I noticed lube on the driver's side control arm and subframe. I found a 1/4" tear on the inner CV boot. I have noticed for a while now a slight "thump" in the steering wheel when taking off from a stop and have looked at the rack and engine mounts and haven't found anything loose. (Could still be a mount though)

Question is, at 100,750 miles, are the axles assemblies or CV joints due for replacement? Haynes shows a repack and reboot proceedure if the joint is ok. Groton offers remanufactured axles for the turbos. Anyone try them?

Thanks,
Erwin

My clunk when stopping and starting was eliminated when I replaced the top motor mount. As for the CV boots, I replaced my passenger side with little frustration. The axle nuts are stubborn. Get a big cheater pipe and 3/4" breaker bar.

    Good luck.

I replaced the large upper mount with an IPD unit last year so that's good, BUT, the strut that runs from that point to the firewall has a bushing at the firewall end that is suspect. I'll check that one tonight.

      Thanks,

      Erwin

Most repair shops just install a rebuilt unit rather than risk a repack on a high mileage axle. They're not too expensive if you do the labor yourself. You may even be able to find them available locally rather than pay the shipping charges from FCP Groton. Good luck.
