Steering Rack 850 1996

Thinking about helping my son change his steering rack on 96 850. Seal is leaking. Have never changed rack, but do nearly all my own work on my Volvos. $290.00 (US) is the price I have found on the net for a rack. I realize I'll have to have front end realign after installation.

Is this a job worth trying to do myself?

Special tools?

Good source for rack?

Thanks guys (and gals),

Gary

My father and I helped my oldest bother replace the rack on his '94 850. It did take most of the day and really had it's moments, but we figured it out and got it done. It was really nothing too special, but you'll want to have on hand a good assortment of tools and be prepared to improvise to reach a couple tight spots between the rack, subframe, and body. Also, make sure you can raise the car onto jack stands safely AND get a jack on the engine. We had to raise and lower the engine/subframe a couple times to manuever the old rack out.

Good luck,

Will R.

Thanks for the info. You have given my something to think about - do I want to spend a day on it or let someone else do it for $200.00?

Thanks,

Gary

This is not an easy task as was noted in the previous message. It really can take a full 8 hour day because it it really packed in tightly. On my 240 it was not that hard, but this is one I leave to the mechanics. Good luck either way you go with it. If you do it yourself, let us know what problems you had and give us some tips. You never know, I may be doing mine sooner than I think.
