front end driving noise V70-XC70 1998

My v70 xc has developed a driving noise in the front end. It is a lowpitched almost dull sound that is present while driving. A thorough check on the lift by a certified mechanic has revealed nothing. On the road the noise is present, on the lift it is NOT. When the vehicle is in a turn it is noisier. Any suggestions or similar problems or experiences I would like to hear about.

Peter

Sounds like a bad wheel hub. I just replaced one of mine myself on my 1998 S70. About $150 for the hub through the autoparts discounter and about 2 hours of work. Bay 13 has the instructions and everything worked fine for me. An impact wrench is nice (I have one) to get the axle nut off. Use a 1/2" breaker bar (18-24 inches long) if you don't have the impact wrench. Also need a 36mm 1/2" socket for the axle nut, female torx socket set to remove the hub, a torque wrench, and a jack stand for safety.

Sway bar bushings have been associated with that type of noise.
On my 98 V70 the noise you describe turned out to be a defective strut. I had a dull rattling sound that was present at low speeds over slightly bumpy road and more pronounced in turns.
