S80 Transmission failure S80

My transmission seems to have failed on my 2000 S-80 T6. I remember there was a recall on most 99's to replace the tranmission because of a manufacturing error. Anyone know if the early 00's had the problem. Or does anyone know the vin number series of the problem?

Thanks

No recalls; just problems. Usually it is the S1 solenoid.

"Usually it is the S1 solenoid"

....actually, the code may say that but I've always been told by tech support people that it's really an internal sealing problem thus the reason why a complete trans is required rather than just replacing an S1 solenoid (which would be easy).

Sorry so late on the response, went on vacation. We've replaced S1 solenoids. If the transmission fluid is still viscous, and has good color, it seems to work. Granted, we've only done five, thus far, on S80's, and all within the past year, so longevity may be an issue, but that issue hasn't gone to print yet...

There were not any recalls on 99 models,but all 99 thru 01 models have trans. problems. They are unavoidable on S80. experttech

expertech;

What is the basic problem with the transmission? I heard it was based on a GM transmission.

It is a GM 4T65EV for non-turbo ,4T65EV-GT for turbo. Many S1 ,S2 solenoid faults but always require complete gearboxes,because of hydraulic faults internally. Speed sensor faults which require software upgrade.And the typical complete gearbox failure because se it is not a reliable gearbox. experttech

The transmission problem turned out to be an S-2 solenoid problem resulting in a need to replace the transmission. In addition, the thottle body is failing, also requiring replacement. A total bill of around $5K. Not a happy camper!

You're just getting warmed up. I'm on transmission #4 currently with 115K miles. The remanufactured transmissions from a GM facility in Chicago are significantly worse than the new ones.

The car has 91K miles. Replaced Transmission, Throttle Body and at the last moment an oxygen sensor. Total bill $5.4K. The check engine light came on within hours of getting the car. Message is emission system needs service.

oh dear - that sounds like a MAF sensor...

My advice - get rid of it asap & buy a proper car!

Thats what I did with my T6 & i've never looked back...

Im afraid the volvo badge is cracking and underneath a blue oval is showing through...
