Rear main seal leaking S70 1998

Hi y'all,
Anyone have a suggestion for a leaking rear main seal on crankshaft? I don't really feel like replacing it! Wondering if anyone has a miracle alternative with some sealing product that could be added to oil........they're usually not the best way to go but I haven't yet searched for such an additive........if replacement is the only way to go, I'm looking for the procedure with shortcuts or tips on the easiest way to do it if possible...........thanks!
MHV

There are treatments for leaking rubber seals that are sometimes effective. I have personally had good luck with the one referenced below, but it was a much older vehicle (94-850)which had better reason than yours to have a dried & stiff seal.

There is no mechanic in a can that is going to do what you want, not permanently anyhow. As far as tricks go, there are none. You need to suspend the engine, remove the engine cradle, lower the engine/transmission assembly and pull the trans out. Simple, huh?

Thanks Rule 308, I was hoping some new products might be available as I don't have the time for these kinds of repairs anymore. Done many engines in the past but never encountered one with a bad RMS at 105k miles. I don't mind fixing all of the other chronic problems this car has, but a bad RMS at such a mileage now makes this car a piece of garbage in my opinion.

Don't despair MHV. The RMS on my last car (1996 850) went out at 55k and I had it repaired at my local dealer. $1200 later all was well. As far as I know the replcement seal is wider than the original and should do fine for years to come. Try to find the cause of the seal failure such as crank case pressure problem.

Put it down to the joys of running one of these cars and move on (to the next repair!)

I now run a 1998 S70/T-5, looks great, drives great at 80k miles. Nearly $3k in repairs in the last year (evaporator, ABS, ignition switch, brakes, etc...), but it's still cheap motoring. ('Think my heater core is next to go...!)

Reading B. Board has helped me to set the right expectations about these cars. Properly maintained any good Volvo should run for as many years as you or I want them to.

        C.
