What do I look for when visually inspecting motor mounts S40-V40 2000

I brought my 2000 S40 (37000 miles) in for a recall notice and mentioned to the dealer that I heard a "thunk" sound in the front right section of the car. He said that the motor mounts needed to be replaced. I looked them over (the upper mount on the passenger side and the two L/R mounts under the engine on the drivers side) and they look fine. There are no cracks or obvious impact/rubbing points. So my question is: How does one tell when they are bad? I've searched the archives for engine mount related issues, and it seems they are fairly easy to replace, but before I go ahead and begin replacing them, I want to be sure that they are faulty.

I just paid $240 to change the mount on the passager side last week. And I would like to know the recall number from Volvo. Thanks!

Cracks in the mounts are hard to see. You can usually see them better if you safely lift the motor on each side.
