My 2001 S80 has slight clunk when I put it in D or R. It also has a clunk while I am driving if I give it gas it clunks, then it clunks again when I let up on the gas. I replaced the top motor mount, but want to know how to determine if the bottom mounts are bad or perhaps there might be something else to check out.

Well, I solved the problem. It turned out that it was one of the bolts that holds the upper strut tie bar to the strut wall was just a tad loose. When you would go from D to R it was a clunking noise that sounded like it was coming from the bar. I removed the bar and inspected everything, re-installed it and tightened it down, now the noise is gone.

I've got a customer with a 99 that's doing the same thing. She's bringing it in next Wednesday. There are a few service bulletins that apply, one which refers to resonance noise transferring from the wheel through the strut spring and indicates an installation of insulator plates/spring seats. I intend to look at that, and a few other things while it is here. I'll let you know what I find.
