High mileage T5's, a question for you S70

My 98 has 96,000 miles on it and it seems like its just making a ton of noise. Anything below 2000 rpm produces nothing but what seems like the engine rattling, and when coming on boost the whole intake system just doesn't sound very smooth at all, lots of sucking noises that fluctuate in pitch. At around 90-92k I had a lower engine mount replaced. Also had a compression check done - 165/155/155/150/165. Tiny bit concerned about what that 4th cylinder will bring me in the future. Throttle body was also cleaned.

But anyways, those of you with higher mileage T5's, what are yours sounding like these days? noisy and clatters all around, or still somewhat smooth?

I'm thinking at this point I need to check out all the hoses (although the boost gauge is indicating there are no vaccum/boost leaks) and have the exhaust system checked out for any leaks.

Thanks for any input guys-
Dan

96,000 miles is not high milage.

Our 850 Turbo, 1994 model, had 110,000 when we recently traded it for a XC90 and it ran like a sewing machine, and would gobble up just about anything on the interstate.

It sounds like your lifters might be noisy. If this is the case, I recommend MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil). Yes, I know, I also hate the name, however, this is a good top oil lube, and it has a lot of detergent in it and solvent, and it will most certainly quiet noisy lifters.

I'm not a big fan of oil additives, as I prefer Mobil-1 or Amsoil synthetic products which certainly don't need any additives.

For a turbo it's very important to get oil to the turbo bearings quickly, upon starting, and also get oil that has good film strength. Amsoil recommends their 10W30 Turbo Formulated Motor Oil (ATM) product for the new turbo cars, and I'm not sure what would be recommended for a high milage turbo, but I'd suspect it would be nearly the same regardless, as the start up on a turbo really spins the cold bearings, and when it's working at 120,000 RPM it's working very hard (and hot) too, so synthetic is highly recommended.

I'm gonna see if I can get a recording for you guys.

I guess it might just be normal, but for something thats buttery smooth and nothing but turbo and exhaust sound above 2k rpm, I would think it should be quiet under that as well.

It's just perfect. I mean, I've had noisy injectors since about mile #1 and I still have the same noisy injectors today.

Is it a shop that knows Volvos that's working on your car? Also, do you know the car's history? Did you buy it new? How are your valve lifters? Have the oil pump "o" rings ever been replaced?

Yep they know Volvo's alright - Sweedish Car Specialists, Inc. Does nothing but Volvos. I've had the car scince day one and have all the service records. Oil pump o-rings have never been replaced. So you're thinking its the top end makink all the noise? How would one check to make sure there is proper oil flow, aside from removing the valve cover.

      Thanks

My 96 854t5 w96k sounds the same as the day I bought it in '98 w36k. If you are talking about Randy's shop in Schaumburg, Il, what does he say?

It's weird because everytime it leaves their shop it runs really sweeeeet. I'm thinking its because of the ECU reset (battery disconnected). I haven't really addressed this issue specifically, but when I bring it in for it's next oil change I will talk to them about it and see what they think. They have mentioned how good of condition the mechanicals of the car is in for having the mileage.

Maybe what I need is a Ipd chip and exaust, I'm sure that will make her run better.. hehehe

Mine has 114k miles on it and runs silky smooth (touching wood frantically here!!!)... At idle it sounds a bit tappety (but I suspect this is due to noisy injectors and not lifters). It pulls strongly and smoothly (and quietly) from 1200rpm in any gear with no fuss or bother.

If yours is suspected to be ill I certainly wouldn't do and chip it or try to extract more power as that will probably exacerbate the problem...

            I have 83K on my 1998 S70 T5M. I notice engine rattle eblow
2000 RPM in 3rd, or higher. But, it has always done that.

Runs like a swiss watch aftwer ECU reset and then slowly becomes
more "rough" with more engine vibration after a day, or so.

It soundz like there is some error condition that the ECU is trying to compensate for. Thus, runs ok when ECU is reset and then deteriorates. Vaccum leak? Bad plug or wire?

              Good luck.
