ABS Failure V70-XC70 1998

The warning light for ABS have been coming on a few times during last few weeks. My mechanic told me that the ABS system is failing and has to be repaired/replaced and cost about $600. Wow!?. I called another place, they said they should run a diognostic test then they can tell me what the problem is and how much it cost. They said it may cost up to $3000.???? I like to know more about ABS system, considering I do not know much about cars. how often do they go bad anyway? I have 104,000 miles on my car. Do breaks work without ABS? Is it safe? I thought it was a little computer chip that monitors the break to lock up. Thank you all.

    ABS Failure V70-XC70 1998

Most likely your ABS Control Unit has failed. All of them will eventually fail after they reach 80,000 miles or 5 years.
By the way, you happen to have the year where we have experienced the most amount of ABS
Control Unit failures. The one on my 98 V70 failed at 85,000 miles.

Reading the ABS codes costs about $125.00 at the dealer and about 95% of the time, the diagnosis is a defective ABS Control Unit.

Here's information I have on this subject.

      98 S-70
      ABS/Tracs lights both on.
Started your procedure for removal> I didnt have the
connector all the way off and decided to reseat it and recheck your
pics.. now the only light that is on is the ABS light..

I am thinking about pulling the connector and cleaning it to see if that
clears the ABS light also.. OR .. is the solder joints you touch up
      associated with the board/connector interface?
I am also working on the air pump and a slight oil leak on the
input to the turbo.. Getting close to stuffing a rag in the filler tank.;-)
I disconnected the connector for the air pump and tried running a direct
feed to the pump and got no response.. (Black= grnd / Blue/red = hot)
I also tried monitoring the output from the relay at the feed connection
for voltage but got nothing.. but no telling if it even tried kicking on
as the car had been run a couple of times already.

Damn these things have crowded engine bays!
