HIgh speed 'hesitation' - transmission? V70-XC70 2000

My wife's car - a 2000 V70XC, 40K miles - is having a slight problem at cruise speed (55-70MPH). With the RPM in the 2250-2400 range, the car feels like it's intermittantly losing just a slight amount of power - like a wind gust hits the car. The RPM doesn't budge, but it feels like the car is just about to drop into a lower gear, or that something is drawing power away from the transmission. You can feel it in the gas pedal.

Is there an electronicly controlled or mechanical shifter on the A/T that might be out of adjustment or some accessory that might be cycling in the higher gears? I was thinking the turbo or a/c compressor might be engaging, but that shouldn't be cyclic and it would also show up as a drop in RPM...yes?

The transmission fluid looks good - maybe a little high, but it hasn't been touched since the car was new.

On another subject, the gears in her headlight wiper are stripped. Anyone familiar with this fix?

    HIgh speed 'hesitation' - transmission? V70-XC70 2000

I just had a similar problem on my 2000 v70xc. I thought it was an intermittant miss at about 60mph. I noticed it especially accelerating up a hill. Do a search for "skip and a bounce" or "hesitation". They replaced the throttle body assembly and it appears to have cured the problem. There is a technical service bulletin that covers this problem, a software fix.

With any problem like this you have to determine if it is a fuel/air problem or ignition problem. From what you are describing I would put my money on a fuel problem. When was the fuel filter last replaced? Has the car been filled up with bad gas? Have the fuel injectors become fouled? Is your air filter clogged? Start with the easy stuff first like the fuel and air filters.

      Tony -
Thanks for the suggestions. The air filter is in great shape, and the fuel filter has never been changed - Volvo suggests the first fuel filter change at 105k miles and we're well below that. I am planning on changing it if a bottle of fuel system cleaner doesn't help. Since this only happens at 55-70 MPH, I was leaning more toward the transmission because (my thinking), if it were a fuel problem, it would happen at various speeds, and it seems to only do it in 4th gear on the A/T. My other theories include some clogged port or inlet that would create a slight pressure differential during a higher demand period. I will report back with any success from the fuel system troubleshooting.

I had the exact same problem and the throttle-body fix seemed to cure it, except my ETS light came on and wouldn't go out till I shut off the car. The fix includes replacing the throttle-body and a software upgrade. All work was done by my dealer under the emissions warranty, which I believe is 70K or 80K. Our car has 59K miles.

My dealer said it was unrelated to the problems I explained to him (hesitation at about 70mph, exact same thing you described) and he emphatically suggested I needed to do the 60K service or risk transmission failure. When I refused he said he would record it in my service record should anything happen to the transmission. All he was trying to do was get me to pay $689 for the 60K tuneup so I would think that fixed the problem.

Had the new throttle-body and software in for two days now and the problem has not recurred.
