do not start about 15 minutes...please help 850 1995

i have a problem with my car, but it does not give me the problem all the time. the problem is a car does not start only once a while. it usually occures when i try to start engine after i park my car for a minutes or so. but, if i wait about 15 minutes, i will start back again. and runs no problem. only thing that i notice is that it is hard to turn off the key. it feels like the key got stuck on the ON position. but it will turn to stop engine.
I have heard that it may be transmissions' positioning sensor or something, the computer inside of transmission to recognize the transmission is in PARKING, so i can start engine. when the symptom occures, it is always in the parking, but maybe, it does not recognize the position of transmission.
when the engine does not start, the lights on the dash is bright, and it does not crank or anything, it does not do anything.
please tell me what do you think??

When it does this again, put the car in neutral and see if it will start. Usually if the problem is the pnp switch, you are alerted to the problem with a brief flash of an arrow on the dash. I had a car doing the same thing, customer towed it from Panama City, I started it umpteen thousand times, and then the day before I was leaving for vacation, after I had called to tell her "I can't break it, come pick it up", it failed. I put it in neutral, and it started. Luckily the pnp switch is an easy fix. Sounds like your problem may be the same.

List on the part, I believe is about $130.00. It sits right under the air filter box, labor charge shouldn't exceed 1.5 hours (I charge 1.0 hour).

Hi - I had the exact problem on my 850 too. With mine it happened when the air was cooler - like under 50 deg F. I rec'd two answers about the problem from this list - one was the PNP and the other was the ignition switch. Since I am new to mechanics, I chose to replace the ignition switch because it was easier to do and the part was cheaper. It did not fix the problem. Just a warning! I'm now going to replace the PNP. There are good directions on the Bay 13 website on how to do it so I'm going to try. Good luck to you. Marcia 1993 850 @174,775
PS: There is also information on this site and others that when the non-start happens to change the shifter back and forth from P to 2nd around 15 times. (that's with the engine off). That is supposed to clean the contacts. It may be a temporary fix for yours.

I think your problem is a defective ignition switch(electrical part). Cheap and easy fix.

At least I would start there.

What you are describing definitely sounds like a transmission (PNP park-neutral-park) switch problem. I had a similar problem and the no-start key-turning became more frequent. I thought it was related to time or key position and hoped it would just continue to be an annoyance. One day I was stranded. After having my car towed to the Volvo shop, they changed the PNP switch (about $370) and it has started ever since.
