Check Engine Light V70-XC70 1999

On a road trip this weekend, the check engine light came on. The car seemed to run fine and sound normal. We were a long way from home and a dealership, so I continued with no ill effect. The light then went off and stayed off. Then, it went on again and now, it's off. I've heard that a cause could be the fuel cap (although I don't understand that relationship) or a faulty emmission valve of some sort. Any experts out there?

I'm not an expert, but a loose or faulty gas cap will cause the Check Engine light to go on. The computer senses the loss in vacuum in the fuel tank system. Such a loss will allow hydrocarbon emissions into the air, a pollution problem. Make sure the cap is tightened on correctly. My wife has incorrectly tightened it several times (kind of off-set the threads), and the light went on. I don't like to have the light on, so I had to disconnect the battery for a few hours to reset the computer. If you have a code reader, you can reset it with that so you don't lose radio station presets, etc.

It is also possible that your gas cap is faulty, though more of a chance it is just not screwed on correctly.

Try to get an OBDII code read. If u get a P1171 it's
probably your MAF sensor. It was mine.

The good news it's only about $160. mail order and relatively
      easy to install.

Thanks. Actually, my dealer said that the cannister shut-off valve was the culprit. Replacement cost: $390! I think I'm going to check some independant garages for a better price, or is this part also available and easily installed?

of the I believe 4 times the light has been on in the past two years, three times it was my wife not outting on the gas cap properly. The fourth time is was the MAF sensor also.
