Inner rim rust/corrosion? 850 1995

Has anyone else had this problem during their 850 ownership?
For the 2nd time in about a year, I have one of my OE aluminum wheels giving
me slow leak problems with the bead of the tire. I have to keep refilling the one tire twice a week with 4-5 lbs of air. I took it to the local tire tech and he said this happens alot with aluminum wheels. He went on to say they corrode on the inside along the bead area of the rim and cause the slow leak.
My rims have never been bent or touch a curb. Does this sound normal?

I had one get a crack in it - probably from one of the impressive potholes we grow in New York State! But never from corrosion - sounds like a chevy alloy rim.

While it is not "normal" it happens frequently.

The Hydras on our 744 TI leaked 5 psi, per week before we got new tires and had the wheels cleaned.

If you look at an unmounted rim, you will see that movement of the tire bead has taken all the paint off in that area.

We had a set of steel wheels that rusted in the bead area because the sleezy tire dealer that sold the tires to the last owner used a gooey sealant. These wheels had to be discarded because there was 1/8" of rust under the bead.

You should have all four wheels cleaned in the bead area.

I check tire pressures weekly because of problems such as these pop up if you drive 10-year-old cars.

Jim;
When you state "have all four wheels cleaned in the bead area", what
exactly needs to be done? In other words, should the aluminmum be
wire brushed or do I need to re-coat the area with something?

I my case, my trusty tire dealer wire brushed them, I do not know what they did after that. ( I have been buying tires from them for 40 years, and they treat me pretty good! )

I will find out tomorrow if the dealer coated them with anything.

I have spray painted steel wheels, inside and out, in the "off season" (summer wheels on the car)

Some epoxy paints might cure fast enough to be of some good, or perhaps lacquer.

The OE wheels are not steel, they do not "rust". They should not be coated because this will wear off easily. If they are pitted, then buff them with a wheel. I would think it is the one tire itself which has a bad bead.
