S70 brakes - best rotor/pad combination S70 1998

Hi everybody,

Here is an old story; I need to replace my rotors and pads (front and back) on my 98 S70 (100,250km). I changed the brakes four years ago when we bought the pre-owned car and it has been wonderful for us.

I started looking on the web in an effort to educate myself on my options on parts and to save a few bucks. I must admit, I’ve become inundated with the vast amount of information available. My first question is, is there any real advantage to getting cross-drilled rotors? I’m in Montreal, Canada and as you my know our winters are very severe here. Is there any effect on the discs with the extreme cold temperatures? This may sound stupid, but is there any chance of snow build-up in the holes?

Finally, I know this is a loaded question, but in your opinion what is the best rotor/pad combination? (I’m still trying to digest the information in Jim Rothe’ web site!).

Looking forward to your replies, cheers.

OEM. You can bet Volvo engineers have done more Volvo specific
research and testing on this question then any after-market company.
The OEM parts work very well. Plus, you get new 15mm bolts for
the pad assembly when you buy OEM rotors (Volvo says the bolts should
be replaced and I'll go with their engineering on that issue). Flush
the brake fluid with DOT4+, too (this can be hard to find so I use
Volvo brake fluid, too). Brake fluid should actually be flushed every
two years according to my owners manual.

One of the things Volvos are best known for are their excellent brakes. There are a lot of other parts worth upgrading, but in my opinion, original Volvo brakes are the best.

I always look at brake posts because many are quite funny.

You should do a search - I've seen

    Squealers
    Rumblers
    Vibrators
    Pulsers
Brake pads that refuse to work in the rain

Many people who use non-OEM pads end up paying twice as they have to buy pade to replace those that make too much noise.

I've had at least 20 brick brake jobs, never had any noise with OEM. Most Volvos that we have purchased had other pads, and all made noises until we went back to OEM, although we usually toughed it out until the pads were worn enough for replacement.

I second all of the suggestions. Stick w/ OEM

I went with Brembo Front Cross Drilled Rotors with OEM pads and they worked great!!! In the rear my mechanic tried twice to use aftermarket and they squealed!! One started to squeal right away, this one now has just begun to squeal after a year!
