My third brake light, the one mounted inside the rear window is on the fritz
and I would like to know if I can just disassemble the whole thing and still
have the electrical fault system work as normal?
I have had that darn idiot light on the dash for some time and recently at my
annual state inspection the mechanic replaced the bulb only to have it burn
out within weeks later. When I checked the contacts on the bottom of the housing, they are actually broken off shorter than normal. I just don't feel like spending over $50 to replace all the necessary stuff to make this work normal again. Besides, if I had a spoiler on the back, I have read that most driver's disconnect the lamp I am speaking of because they have another 3rd brake lamp built into the spoiler.

    Dunno fer sure if this will work but it seems like it ought to:

    Measure the resistance of the brake light bulb and install a resistor of that value across the brake light leads. Seems like it should replicate the load of the bulb, ya know?

    When I bought my '93 850 the third brake light was not functioning. When I removed the assembly, I found the contacts corroded and broken off just as you described. I ended up having my mechanic replace it, among others when I had it inspected. I think the whole assembly, installed was $30. Try calling FCP Groton to see if they carry the part, it should cost about that much.

    Hi there, I removed my 3rd brakelight because I added a spoiler with led brakelight, unfortunately everytime I step on the brake the light comes on. this is just one of those things you have to live with if you wanna look good. kelly
