Bicycle Rack 850 1996

Hello,

I have a '96 850 GLT wagon, with a Volvo OEM roof rack. I want to buy a bicycle rack that can accomodate 4 adult sized bikes at once. I don't want the type of bike rack that rests against the rear door, but instead, one that places the bikes on top of the roof. I know Volvo sells one. Is that one the best because it's specifically designed for a Volvo? Does Thule offer one? If so, is it better than Volvo's? Does Thule or Volvo sell a bike rack that will accomodate 4 bikes at once? Thank you in advance your replies.

Hugh

My preference is to use the Volvo load bars (aerodynamic euro style) then I use a Thule kit that adapts to these load bars. The Thule Velo-Vice kit #889 includes a locakable rack and one set of adapters for the older Thule style (non-locking) bike holders. I also mount a lefty suspension Jekyll, so I use the Yakima "ankle biter" that adapts to the Thule as well. I've had 3 bikes mounted and think that you could squeeze in a 4th bike. Check out the Thule web site (www.thule.com) - seemed to be down when I checked for some other suggestions. Actually Thule is the OEM for Volvo bike racks but you can find a greater selection and likely better pricing at a Thule dealer. With this configuration, I can easily remove the entire rack in 10 minutes by removing the 4 mounting screws at the Volvo rails! Good luck.
