torque convertor lock up v70 2001 V70-XC70

It seems that my torque convertor locks up too early at 4th gear at very light throttle and city driving speeds, therefore the engine performs poorly.
What could be the reason ?

    hello,
what on earth makes you think your t/c clutch locks up too early? how do you know this is happening? when posting a thread describe the symptoms of the problem you are experiencing not what you think is the cause.

    steve.

      Thanks Steve here it is:
      speed 40m/h, auto tranny, revs are @~1500, I am in 4th gear, cruising, suddenly they drop to ~1300-1350, engine is bogged down, something like mix too rich, sounds different, when I put manually gear into 4th, revs come back to ~1500, engine is alive, responsive etc etc etc;
      regards

        Hi:

I get this on my 01 V70 T5 auto all the time. As far as I can tell, the shift logic wants to shift to 5th whenever there is minimal load on the car. The downside of this is there is no torque on tap immediately when you want to speed up again. In my car, a gentle push on the gas doesn't downshift.

When this happens and you push the stick left. The display should show that you are in 5th gear. Is this the case for you?

To avoid this problem, I generally manually shift rather than letting the shift logic do its thing.

Mine is fully auto - no geartronic
Did you have software upgrades done on your car ?

I got the car used so I don't know what was done before. I haven't had the dealer check out the software version since I owned it. During the 45k service at the Volvo dealer, they didn't mention the software needed to be upgraded. I'll probably ask the them next time I take it to dealer service.

I guess you have a 2.4? I'm not sure we have the same transmission and/or program.

The following sites have lists 01 v70 service bulletins. Read the power train section of the service bulletins. It won't tell you about software updates. But you can be armed with more info if you decide to ask the dealer service about this. Good luck.

        torque convertor lock up v70 2001 V70-XC70

        hi again,
right im not sure that the t/c lock up would even be happening at 40mph.but even if it was, if you are in 4th gear doing 40mph then there would be very little load on the engine as you are just cruising so i dont see why t/c problems would make the engine bog down.
a way you can test t/c lockup operation is to tap the brake pedal with your other foot as you are driving and see if the revs rise slightly as this should cause the t/c clutch to release, this will tell you if the t/c even locks up or not at this speed.
your problems are more likely to be engine managment related,if the gearbox was at fault the there should have been a message in the display saying "gearbox service required" or "engine service required". best thing to do would be to visit your volvo dealer and get them to check for fault codes (dtc's) on the car, this will give them and you a starting point as to what needs doing.
from memory there are several software upgrades for early 01- v70 auto transmissions and your problem may well be software related.

        regards
        steve.

ok how to tell each gear....no easy way and since the changes are so smooth you have to start off from static and count each gear change as you move off, this is not always easy to do but there is no other way.
the gear box with geartronic is a different box so you cant really compare it properly.
as for software upgrades...these are not done as a matter of course unless it is part of an active service campaign and there arent any currently on v70 auto boxes.
the upgrades are done at the dealers discrestion depending on the nature of your complaint and what they consider would be required to fix it,the upgades usually consist of minor tweeks or changes to aspects of the gearbox shift logic or to fix minor problems that are only apparent after cars have a few years behind them and mechanincal components are starting to "wear in",it is all very complicated and not even dealers are privy to the full nature of the changes the newer software may contain.
this type of problem and this type of car cannot be really diagnosed through forum feedback or other owners websites such as this,it is just the nature of the car....
            hope this all helps.

            steve.

I did another form of a test: while driving in cruise control this does not happen; say, I am doing 40-45mph, as I mentioned car is pulling nicely, then 4th lockups(or upshifts to 5th?), engine feels a bit bogged down; then at that moment, I set the cruise control on, revs adjust themselves (up)right away!;basically cruise 'tells' the ECM/TCM that gear should stay in 4th for this given load......go figure??? or I set cruise right away at the same speed, w/o waiting for the lockup,.....engine pulls nicely all the time, there is no lockup (or upshift to the 5th) !
              Regards
