I look under the cowl shield today to see if I had a replaceable pollen filter and all I saw was down into where the blower motor squirrel cage was located. The opening into that area is slightly rectangular and rounded a little on the back inboard edge. Did some 850 na for '95 come without this pollen filter or can it be adapted for one?

I just bought a pollen filter from the dealer today -$30.

I don't think any of the 850's came with the pollen filter. Volvo started it with the C70 line and realized it might help the 850's with their evap problems. You can get the retrofit kit from www.FCPGroton.com , look under the 850 tune-up section. You need the filter and the mount kit. Just pop the plastic cowling off (remove the wiper arms...) and it just snaps in place.

No no...that stuff dont come free now. Wwhat you need to do is run and buy yourself one IF your AC still works. This has known to be the cause of many Evaporator failures. I'm in the midst of doing the replacement and whilst I;m just nearly done, I'll say it was a tough job requiring fierce commitment and will. Of course if you got a 6 figure salary, shelling out $1000 to the mechanic (for labor mainly) is another option. Mine is a 96 but all 850's are prone to this problem

in answer to you thread, some cars came with it most didnt,almost all v70/s70's did. you can also buy the filter and the holder that the filter sits in as a kit from your local volvo parts dealer,the kit just clips onto the fan opening you described.
