Hi Tom,
When my ABS module was failing, I would get the ABS/Tracs warning light only on long drives in hot weather. Once when that happened, I tried the brakes when I drove through a wet patch, and sure enough, the brakes locked and skidded rather than pulsing. So it truly is an ABS failure and is worth fixing. My dealer wanted over $600 for the repair, and told me the part # was the same, so nothing improved over the failed unit I already had. That's why I went with Victor's repair for $150. When he did the repair, he told me there were some cracks in the circuit board and evidence of some burned out areas, but he was able to fix it and I haven't had another ABS/tracs light come on since, though I admit I haven't done any long drives yet.
I agree that it is unconsionable that a company which supposedly believes in safety "for Life" refuses to issue a recall on this clearly defective safety-essential item. By the way, when I removed my unit, I was surprised to see that my fine European luxury vehicle uses an ABS module "Made in the Phillipines" Ain't globalization a wonderful thing? Glad to know that Volvo brake parts are produced in an Asian sweat shop.
