VIN decoding for 850 850 1997

Hi, I am serious about buying an 1997 850 Wagon described by the used dealer as an "850 AWD Turbo Wagon". I would like to verify what equipment is actually included, and what the engine it is. Is there a modern VIN decoder (all I found on the web stops at 1996 - and which does not include type "56" I read from the VIN), and/or what should I look for in the vehicle to verify the engine type, presence of AWD, and other tell-tale features. I noticed the TRACS button, if that helps. Thanks!

    the 56 you refer to is on the left side of the vehicle attached to the transmission case if it is a north american car. if it is not then the 9th plece in your vin will either be a 3 or 8 depending wheather it is manual or auto, both are for AWD. good luck!!!

    I have the info you need but I will need a better description of where you are finding the 56 you speak of according to my book the only reference to 56 in the vin is the 6th and 7th digits and they denote a B5254t engine was originally installed in the car.other than that the only other place they show the trans type is on the case of the trans on left lower portion, that is unless your car is not a us or canadian version in which case it will be in the ninth position of the vin and will be a single digit either a 3 or8 ,but it is not relevant for north american models. good luck!!!!

      Hi. Thanks for the input! Yes, it is the 6th and 7th digits. So I guess it is the 2.5L 190hp turbo engine. I forgot to write the whole number down, but I will see it again tomorrow, and will take down the whole number. It is a car currently for sale in Canada (so I suppose it was imported here orginally).
