V70 - steering craps out unexpectantly V70-XC70 1998

At first spuradically, now more and more consistently, the power assist on the steering goes out on my 1998 V70. I am told this is an expensive fix and I should wait until it gets unbearable. I would say it's at that point. Any suggestions or ideas as to what needs to be replaced?

Craps out unexpectedly? Does it run out of power steering fluid? Usually the pump seal (I would fix that before it took my alternator with it making it even more expensive. I get rebuilt power steering pumps locally for $195.00. I could probably get them cheaper if I ordered from a warehouse, I just like the local lifetime warranty). Has this only started happening since you started running the AC? Could the belt be slipping? Could the AC compressor be cycling because of low freon, creating a drag on the belt and thus the power steering? I've never had a customer's power steering just "crap out" unexpectedly.

    Chris

You pose some good questions there Chrissij. I think it may very well have started happening since starting the AC. My wife drives the car 30 miles to work every day and back (60 miles total) so I will run your questions by her as well. The car does need a freon recharge, so the drag on the belt is very plausable..... I will check all this out and keep you posted. I'm hoping that's what it is, because we have been sticking a lot of $ into this car as well as my '91 240GL wagon lately. We said the hell with the ABS "tracks on/off" light situation like most people, because of the ongoing recall dispute for that known problem. At least the brakes still work even if the ABS doesn't, which isn't the case with most other cars. Thanks for your suggestions and I will keep you posted.
