DASH AND CONSOLE LIGHTS STILL OUT AFTER NEW SWITCH 850 1995

I just installed the new factory headlight switch in my 850 na sedan to correct my dash/console light problem...but it still exists. The lights all go out after about 30 seconds or when I flip on the highbeam stalk switch. The little green light in the upper LH corner of the switch is on but the one showing the low beam headlight has never lit up and this is a new switch and I have even swapped the bulbs with each other.....Help....any other suggestions..This is driving me crazy.....

Thanks for any advice......

hmmm...don't have my wiring diagrams with me at home, but I suspect I could follow this circuitry through to the headlight relay...I'll let you know on Monday unless I bop by the shop before then.

Chris, Is there an actual plug in relay like on my 240 and if so, where is it located? I'm off to the brickyard again tomorrow to continue stripping the only 850 there......

      Thanks, Bob.

Then go ahead and grab the rheostat as well in case that's the problem. The relay is under the fuse panel. There's basically two levels of relays. Pull the cover off of the fuse panel, you'll need your torx 25, and then gleefully grab whatever is left (it's easier to get to the second level under the dash) The headlight relay is a double relay...it's black...I'm trying to visualize the panel in my memory...and I think it has an A and an E on it. I'd grab the central locking relay as well...those die, and the bulb integrity relay in the trunk. Hmmmmm what else would I strip off of an 850 and squirrel away if the price was right...the steering wheel (for the horn), the glove box (for when it locks itself), the fuel pump relay, the main relay under the cowl, the cam sensor, the hood release mechanism (for when it breaks), the pnp switch if it looked nice and new, the driver's side visor, the shift lock solenoid, the black trim that extends the length of the car over the windows and such (if it's nice), the master window switch, the glass out of the mirrors, the overhead courtesy light...yep...I could definitely spend some time with that car.

        Chris

Oh by the way, I also removed and reseated the ignition switch contact pins with no results and did the wiggle test check on all the wires inside the steering colunm while I was in there. I'm going to the brickyard today to remove the ignition switch pin assy and the sliding rheostat switch from a wrecked 850 sedan....anything else I should do?????

    Thanks

DASH AND CONSOLE LIGHTS STILL OUT AFTER NEW SWITCH 850 1995

I am very interested in this because now I am having almost the same problem. I wrote 2 weeks ago that the dash lights were going out intermittingly after I had opened the dash to replace the odometer gear. But they would come back on so I figured loose connection only.

Now they come on when I start the car (dash and console lights) but after about 15 seconds they all go out for the rest of the time the car is on. The only difference between what you describe and what I experience is that I leave my headlights on all the time. Have never turned them off since I bought the car 9 years ago, so I don't ever use the headlight switch.

One thing to possibly check, I will tomorrow, is to clean the fuses. Dealer told me they have experienced problems where fuses got dirty or corroded, needed cleaning, that fixed some electrical problems.

OK, I checked the fuse and it is fine, not dirty. I have the same problem as xraybob. The relay idea previously suggested sounds like the answer. Where is the applicable relay and what does it look like? Could a loose connection behind the instrument cluster be shorting out the relay?

Xraybob here.....I replaced the "LIGHT CONTROL RELAY". It measures 1" X 2.5" and seems to come in a variety of colors. Mine original was green, the replacement is grey. Chris in an earlier thread said it was black....but they all have the same numbers/letters on its top.

          A
          104
          E
          108
Replacing this relay and the rheostat/dash light dimmer did the trick. While I was at the brickyard I took all the lighting relays found just behind the fuse block. One of the relays was the fuel pump relay. If I have time next weekend, I'll get all the others from under the dash area.....Hopefully one will be for the cruise control unit.

At least I'll have one less thing on my mind tonight and will get a restfull nights sleep.....

Thanks to everyone for your valueable help and input this past 2 weeks on this nightmare electrical gremlin..

          Xraybob.....

            Xraybob:

I removed my fuse block cover and there, just as you described, is the green light control relay. I bet that is my problem too. So I am going to find a replacement one and try it. Don't know of any wrecked cars to get one from so I suppose I will have to buy one. Hopefully that will fix my problem, except for the one burned out bulb in the dash, unless that is somehow fixed by this too. Will wait to see.
