rattle inside rear brakes V70-XC70 1998

I get a rattle from inside ny rear brakes, its the same both sides. If I drive with the hand brake on and the foot brake on it makes no difference. when its parked I can bang the tyres with my hand and you get this metalic clanking from inside. the drums and pads are all volvo. when I dismantle them I can find nothing wrong. any Ideas please

I had the same issue with my 1998 V70 AWD I could not ever seem to know what the issue was. I went and and took apart the emergency brake and tighted down everything. Rattle went away.

This might be the same for you.

Are you sure you have drum brakes? My 98 has rear discs. On top of the caliper is a retaining spring held in by two pins. I've had a couple of these springs snap in the 850 and V70 I've had. It remains in place but causes a rattle sound while driving. You can even hear it if you knock the tire while parked. It's a cheap part and very simple to replace. Here's a website I found that shows the pins and spring as part of a shim replacement:

    Good luck.
