850 Turbo 850

I'm contemplating to buy a 95 850 Turbo for my wife and have a question regarding the turbo charged engine. How reliable is this engine with the Turbo and what is the 'lifespan' of the Turbo itself ?

Previously I owned a V40 diesel, but I don't have experience with the 850 engines.

'98 T5, 141,000 miles ... still uses no oil, original clutch and the transmission still shifts like new. NMI 850

Should have searched the archives better. Looks like with some care they get easily up to 200k :)

My 96 850 Turbo just turned 180,000 yesterday. No significant problems with the engine or turbo, still runs very strong! The key to longevity on these engines is regular oil changes and in my opinion the use of synthetic oil-either Mobil One or Amsoil. I have used Mobil One since day one and no engine or turbo failures-would like to shoot for 300,000 miles now. The 850's do have some other trouble areas including TRACS/ABS control module failures, interior creaks and groans seem to be a problem, etc. Check the board postings. Good Luck...

I'm not too worried about squeeks, rattles and groans (neither shocked about the price of parts) as I currently own a Land Rover and boy is that thing capable of draining your bank account (fun to drive though offroad).

My main points are that the car needs to be safe and reliable (if the A/C fails then too bad). My wife will drive it and I'd like to keep her around for a while ;)

        Thanks for your help!
