Lifters in V70 T5 1998 V70-XC70

Hello,
I have a 1998 V70, T5 with 102000 miles. It has been a few months that even the oil level is satisfactory, I still hear the sound of lifters. Sounds like an old Mercdes Benz with Diesel engine, click, click, click. I should say it comes and goes, mosly comes though. My mechanic says that it is common in older models. Please help, the sound is very annoying.

Bruce, my wife has a "98 V70 GLT and this recently happened with her car when it got to about 75,000 miles. We bought the car new and have maintained it well, but all of a sudden the clicking started, all the time.
My independent Volvo mechanic did the o-ring replacement and it didn't help at all. He then decided to go ahead and replace all of the lifters since it is difficult, if not impossible to know which one to replace.
The good news is that Volvo now sells a lifter kit for aroung $80, rather than facing the replacement of all lifters and buying individual lifters for a much greater total cost.
Interestingly, when my mechanic got into the engine, he could tell which lifter was bad, because it was "squishy" and clearly was bad. After he replaced all the lifters, the car had been as quiet as new.
Good luck, Fred.

You might need to replace the o rings in the oil pan. I did that to my 1999 V70R several months ago, and the ticking stopped.

Rich Kelley of Bay13 at Volvospeed.com gave me a lot of help, talking me throught the whole process. I did it one Saturday, in my driveway, for less than 50 dollars.

After replacing the o rings, I could see a lot more oil sloshing around on the camshaft when the car was at idle speeds. When the o rings fail, the oil pressre to the top part of the engine (valve lifters and camshaft) is reduced.

Hope this helps,

Bill_V70R

Hey Bill....... V70-XC70

How bad were the lifters ticking and did it come on all of a sudden? My 98 V70R now has 103K on the clock but no noise. Planning a 2000 mile round trip this summer so I wonder if I'm asking for any trouble?

Hey Bill....... V70-XC70

My V70R's engine ticking sound happened at cold startup. It would eventually go away, but it started taking longer and longer for the ticking to stop.

I changed the o rings in November, it hasn't had the ticking sound once since then.
