The time and temp digital display is not functioning correctly. The time is never correct; the temp shows Celsius until the 2 buttons are pushed to get F readings. What could have caused this? What has to be done to correct/replace? What is the cost? Can it be done by a backyard mechanic or does it have to go to the dealer?

If you are familliar with electronics, you might do an exploratory surgery to pull the cluster out yourself, and see if you see anything obvious. For the record (Start the record) European electronics manufacturers (eg. Bosch) tend to make solder joints that fatigue from thermal expansion effects. VDO may or may not be any better, so you might just wanna warm up your soldering iron and go over the larger joints on the computer, or power.

The gague cluster is removed by removing the top of the dash, and pulling the cluster up. The first part is harder than the second part. Installation is the reverse of removal... or something.

Sounds like you are losing power. If you reset the clock, does it run correctly while you are driving it, then losing the setting the next time you start it up? You might have a short or bad ground wire.

As far as I know, The temperature will only display celsius when the gauage is reset such as power lost. Once you set it to F by pressing the 2 buttons simultaneously. It should stay in F forever. It could be that your gauage is acting up. You either get a new one from the dealer or a used one from junk yard. You can replace the gauage yourself.
