1996 850 ABS Issue – Vibration 850 1996

- I drive a 1996 850 plain jane wagon, nothing special and right at 80000 miles – it does not have TRACS (the winter package). Most recently I have experienced a shuddering in the rear brakes – and only at the rear of the car. All pads/rotors are good. The shuddering only happens in slow traffic where you start/stop or need to slow crawl a lot (as dictated by fickle traffic). I thought it was just my wife’s technique of driving. It happened to me. Only once did the ABS light up.

How does one get an accurate diagnosis of just what the problem is? A new ABS pump is expensive. The car brakes solid and true/ and secure. The OBD fault code indicated the ABS pump. There were no other ABS codes indicated. No sensor related codes. No loose assemblies/components either. No controller/computer/or control unit codes (ABS module) either. Sometimes maintenance terms and parts descriptions vary, but actualy seem to address the one in the same item – adding to the confusion.

I disabled the ABS pump (or thought so by removing fuse 29) – only to have the ABS light come on and then no speedometer functionality. But, the car did not shudder during braking operations. Then I find out there are some four (4) total fuses that affect ABS and only 2 are noted in the "drivers" handbook. Dealers do not seem to be more expert.

I have spoken to several Volvo experts (that I trust) and all have a different analysis of how to proceed. In any event they say I should not buy a new ABS pump - but get a used one. Even 2 of them (at Volvo dealers) agree on that. If that is the case I have the Torx socket E5 and rachet and can replace the unit – then re-bleed the whole system. Is it that simple? What have I not considered?

I could use some help and would really appreciate some feedback.

    1996 850 ABS Issue – Vibration 850 1996

I had the same kind of shake. I removed the read brake pads and modified the shim by cutting out a square in one of the quarters. Since then I never get the shake. I still occasionally get the ABS light. The dealership also told me I needed a pump, but from what I have read in other posts, that is a common code when the card fails.

For me, the shaking was unrelated to the ABS light.

The instructions for modifying cutout are on bay thirteen

If you need a used ABS pump pls let me know because I have one sitting around.
It came bolted to my ABS Controller, but since my car only needed the ABS Controller replaced I still have the pump sitting here. Make me an offer.

      1996 850 ABS Issue – Vibration 850 1996

My problem is still here. I knoiw what a new pump costs - UGH! I have it on good advice to not get a new one if that is the problem (the pump). I still have not concluded the pump is the issue. I cannot get the vibration to happen again. The only code I get is the pump. If I remove fuse the odometer/speedometer will not function. What now?

      Thanks

Could be just a speed sensor on one of the rear wheels, either dirty or broken wire or just a bad sensor. There should be a code stored if the ABS light came on. You just need to find a shop that has the scan tool to read the ABS codes on a Volvo, not easy to find. Good luck.

Whatever you do. DO NOT Replace or open the hydraulic block.

Vibration on the rear brakes is not always associated with a malfunctioning ABS system. I have a 98 V70, 96 and 95 850. Once in a while, for no reason at all I get the vibration/shatter in the rear breaks, this problem is not related to the ABS system. Activation of the ABS system by a defective ABS control unit if felt mostly on the break pedal.

The problem with your ABS sytem is most likely a defectiv ABS Control unit, all of the ABS units will eventually fail. That is what everybody is referring to when they tell you to buy a used one.
Used units will also eventually fail as well as a brand new one from the dealer.

Your problem is very common and easy to take correct.

Dude... That link is ubercool. I didn't know the computer on 1996+ ABS implimentations could be removed from the hydraulics without removing the hydraulics. Sweet!
