As you might have guessed, the orange up arrow is flashing, and the verdict is 341 - lock up faulty.
The symptom is that the kickdown is not working (gear is not changing to lower gear when needed to gain speed)
A Volvo dealer will certainly tell you to replace the whole transmission. I have replaced some cluthes and the brake bands. Anybody knows what else to replace.?

No, not any type of web master. I own a Volvo shop, and this is the time of year that dictates that I be sitting at my desk, and getting everything ready for the accountant and the powers that be. I prefer being in the shop, so this is what we call pro"chris"tination. I just leave this up, and if I see a question that I'm pretty sure I can answer, I do so...instead of doing my books.

Anyhow, I haven't looked up the price yet, but I do offer this as a HUGE question mark. If you keep having these "unusual" problems with your transmission, and from what I've read, they are. They aren't following the usual "oh, that's a bad transmission" format. Since all of the components actually send a signal to the computer, couldn't the computer be at fault instead of the components? They don't generally die, but then like I said, yours doesn't seem to be "general". I just pulled up www.car-part.com, and there is one place that is selling that computer for $35.00. If it's not the problem, you could ebay it for that much.

Further, with your strange cooling problem (which is following the usual coolant temp sensor format so this may be a stretch) could you be mixing coolant and transmission fluid? The radiator acts as the transmission cooler. You'd be getting some funky lookin' goo in your reservoir, and your transmission fluid would look pretty nasty...so easy, really easy to check.

Anyhow, I'm back to the books. I'll look up the number and price after I finish my Division of Corporations crap...

Low season huh. Anyway, your answers are good promotions. I even suggest that you write a Volvo service manual. I found the Haynes 850 service manual contents mostly sugesting the reader to leave it to Volvo dealer. The book doesn't even tell you where to find the relays and what are they for.
As you already know, the transmission is Aisin and so the ECU. I don't know the ECU price, but $ 35 sounds cheap to me. You are right about ECU faulty possibility, but simple cable problem is also possible. Now its a matter of replacing the parts piece by piece till I goin broke.
Me mixing the cooland and transmission fluid? or you are telling me that there is a leak between radiator and transmission cooler (which I doubt that it can happen). No, the coolant is green and the transmission fluid is red.
It's been a week I drove Japanese, and leave the Volvo polished by my son.

I believe solenoid SL operates the lock up function, but I will have to double check that. I can also look up the part number and price, as well as look up the procedure.

My mechanic who is former British Leyland mechanic told me that the solenoids are ok. He reluctant to replace the solenoid partly because the price of the solenoids, but he never told me the price (and I never asked). But since you know, why not.
I believe the one that might be faulty is the STH. Solenoid are trigerred by electrical pulse right? If so, where does this electrical pulse came from? and is it going trough the PNP?
