Need help buying a Used V70 (turbo?.... what to look for V70-XC70

Hello All

I am looking for my third Volvo now.... I own a 98 S70 and owned a 96 850 GLT Wagon.

Is there anything special i need to look into when purchasing a V70, maybe even a V 70 Turbo?????

I know the standard routine of the Volvos but if there is anything from the odinary that i may not know owning a S70 please let me know..

Also, how have the Turbo models known to work from a used reliability factor and problems...........

I know the earlier AWD models were bad ones and i will stay away form them......

Thanks

Ali

If you have an S70 you know what you're getting into....

The T5 has a reinforced engine block, sodium-filled exhaust valves and a forged crankshaft. Definitely a more robust engine than either the NA or LPT!

236hp in a Volvo station wagon is a complete hoot! The '01 up P2 V70 versions got much heavier and slower. (The new V50 T5 is lighter and should bring back comparable performance)

The '98 has a throttle cable but the 70,000 mile timing belt. By now most of the trouble spots peculiar to the '98 should have already broken and been fixed or recalled by now. Otherwise it's the "usual" 850-SVC70 problems: AC, electronics, suspension, brakes, light bulbs etc. etc. etc. Avoid all the AWD models according to Consumer Reports.

Only unique concern of the V70 vs. the S70 should be the rear hatch with it's wiper.

Go for it V70-XC70

Since you are familiar with the FWD volvos and its white 20v engine, then you're decision to get a V70 should be easy.

Go for the GLT model(light pressure turbo), lots of power for little money compared to the T5(high pressure turbo).

Everything problemwise that applies to the S70 applies to the wagon plus the tailgate rattles and squeaky rear seats, but these are minor and are solved easy and cheap.

The '99 and newer 70 series scare me with the ON THE FLY electronic throttle sensor, whic usually fails when you're cruising on the highway and expensive to repair, about $1000. Do a search on ETS and you'll see.

There are plenty of clean, one owner, low miles '98 V70 GLT's out there for the picking, I know I bought one. Be patient, ask for maintenance records and you should be OK.

Good luck
