Hi there,
All you do is to look at the back of the light cluster and the only bulb to gat confused with is the double filament bulb side/tail light.
You will need a diagram for the socket on the car are be obtainable from
http://www.rydertowing.co.uk/trailer_towbar_wiring/trailer_towbar_wiring_.htm
or
http://www.towitall.co.uk/trailer_wiring/instructions.htm
You need a test light or wiring diagram for your car.
You can use any 12 volt bulb and holder for a test light,if you put a (scotchlock)we call them onto the live wire going to the bulb you need and put the test light onto the scotchlock ,with the other lead earthed switch on the light you are trying to find and the test light should light if you have the right wire.
Some volvos have the live to the bulb all the time and switch the earth, you can tell by looking at the back of the bulb holder and following the wires to them,if they both go into the loom and not one earthed to the body then you will probably have the live feed at all lights.
You could check by connecting one lead of the test lamp to a bare metal area of the body and touch the other lead onto the back of the bulb holder terminals,if it lights without anything being switched on it's a constant live feed and a switched earth.
It's a lot easier to do than explain as I don't know what your electrical skills are.
Best of luck.
Vaughan
