Rediculous, but valid question S40-V40 2000

A few months ago I purchased a 2000 S40 1.9T - which I love, BTW. When I asked the dealer about the user manuals he told me he didn't have the originals but that he could get me the manuals all the same. When I got home I found out that he had given me the Warranty info for '99 Volvos and the Car manual for a 2001, so I was a year short in either direction and was not aware of some of the features in my car. I have since figured out most of the cool features such as how to turn on/off the daytime R.L. and the 30 second headlight timer, but I need help with one of the most basic controls... between the two center A/C vents there is a knob with a red bar on the top and a blue one on the bottom. I've been assuming to roll it towards blue when using the cold A/C and in the other direction for heat. I just don't get its neccessity though, what with the auto climate controls and all - if I set the temp control at 80 and it's 45 in the cabin, should I roll the mystery control into the red and have the A/C button off? If I'm using the cold A/C but the roller is turned to red will my car explode? I'd like to know exactly what it does, what it controls, and how it functions. Any info would be greatly appreciated - since the guy that sold me the car doesn't know and still can't seem to find the right manual for my car. Thanks a lot!!!

Greg

Go to www.volvocars.com You can access all the correct documents for your car. I think you have to log into the Owner's Circle but still you can get it all free.

Sorry, the red and blue bars may be the other way around (top/bottom), same control either way.

From my 2000 s40 book "The center panel vents have an air mix function which allows air from the outside to enter the passenger compartment when the vents are open (up). This function is designed to allow you to direct air from the outside tword your face while directing air from the climate system to the rest of the passenger compartment."
