What is this device? 850 1996

We just bought a '96 850 sedan (non-turbo). The Haynes manual arrived today, and I read through it but was unable to find any reference to one component. In the engine compartment, centered at the top of the firewall, is a device that looks like an old VW horn, but I'm pretty sure it's not the horn (those are visible up front). What is this thing?

Actually, you'll find a slew of things that the Haynes manual dosn't say anything about. It dosn't mention how to remove the bumpers on anything but 1993 models. It dosn't have a schematic diagram for the seats. Also dosn't say how to reupholster them like the 740/760 manuals. In fact, if you hold the 740 manual next to the 850 manual, you'll notice that the 740's is thicker, even though the 850 is much more complicated.

That’s the horn for the alarm system. Did you get the keychain remotes for the door locks?

Oh, that makes sense - very logical, putting the horn where it can't be reached easily when you break into the car. Yes, we got two of the keyless remotes, one of which works. I guess that means I need to talk to Volvo about the activation codes and all that...

nope..no need to talk to volvo...

if you look in the manual it tells you how to enable them ..cycle the ignition on and off 5 times quickly (nb..dont start the car..just till idiot lights come on) on the 5th time leave it ON now press the big button on each remopte in turn (you should see the alarm warning light on top of the dash blink in response) when you have done both remotes tunr the ignition off..

I would suggest you put new batteries inthe remotes FIRST..

Easy, free and good fun...BTW i had a defective remote with a loose surface mount diod inside mine..soldered it back on ok..but BOY was it tricky!

I need a new battery for my keyless remote. Where do I get one? Radio Shack? Also, do I need to follow the steps you outlined after replacing a battery?

          Much obliged. . .

If it isn't the alarm horn, you may be seeing the SAS valve (secondary air system). It looks like a small round pot will have a purple vacuum line attached plus a larger black hose. Check the photos here :http://volvospeed.com/Repair/airpump1.htm
