Flashing arrow/check engine light on S40-V40 2000

On the highway today the check engine light came on and the up arrow that usually indicated winter driving mode started flashing. The car is now stuck in winter mode. The owner's manual says that this indicates a fault in the autimatic gear box. Has anyone else had this problem. The trans. fluid is maybe a little dirty but the level is ok. The car ran and shifted fine until this happened all of a sudden. I'm going to call the dealer in the morning, but they are 40 miles away. Don't want to burn up the tranny taking it to the shop. Car is a 2000 S40 with 115,000 miles. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The EXACT thing happened to me. My car had 105,000 though. The fluid was dirty and VOLVO said my transmission was dying. The recommended that I consider trading the car.

I have spent thousands of $$$$$ repairing this car. I could have bought a more expensive Japenesse luxury car. COntact me if you are considering any formal corective action. There are some consistent poor performanc etrends and Volvo is not standing behind the product.

I had my turbo chnaged at 39 K miles.

    good luck....

    It should'nt hurt the trannie.
All winter mode means is that it starts off from rest in a higher gear to minimise torque.
If you pull away slowly without to many revs on it should be ok to get to the dealers no problem.

There may be other reasons for your symptoms, but my XC70 had a similar issue last month. The difference was that sometimes any combination of brake, check engine, ABS lights would come on and sometimes the odometer and speedometer would quit working for a few minutes. That being said, sometimes I had the exact thing you describe. It was the ABS control unit.

If you can, go to an AutoZone. They will read the fault codes for free so you can ask the more knowledgeable people on this site for assistance. There were all sorts of codes that sprouted from our problem as this computer deals with so many systems (speed sensor, ABS, etc. etc)

Look up threads dealing with this extremely common problem across Volvo's product line...you don't have to spend the 800-1000 dollars a dealer will likely demand. I got a quote of 450 for parts and labor from a dependable non-dealer, and you will find several references on Brickboard for someone in California that will rebuild yours (and actually reinforce it) by mail for even less.

You might find that although the flashing arrow stays on, after a few restarts, the transmission might work just fine (not stuck in limp home in spite of the arrow flashing). Good luck.
