SC-815 Radio Questions 850

I have a 95 855T Wagon that I installed an SC-815 CD/Cassette stereo in. I gather this radio came out after 1995 because it is not in my owners manual. My question is the display reads "ASC" in the top right corner, what does this mean? I do notice that sometimes the volume seems to cycle up and down randomly, not sure why. I also notice that when a CD plays, there seems to be several split second breaks in the music, not a skip, but for a split second the music seems to cut out but the song stays right in synch. I get an occasional skip only if I go over big bumps. Any ideas why the CD player acts this way? Is it older technology with only 1 beam that is impacted by bumps and perhaps small debris/scratches/fingerprints on the CD?

Thanx for any info/advice.

Keith

I think ASC was for the Auto Volume Control. It adjusts the volume according to your speed. Not sure if it works on older 850's though. You probably are trying to play CD-R's in the 815. CD-R's give the SC-815 a LOT of problems. I usually have to burn my CD's at 2x to get the best performance from the CD player. It's nothing like a new CD player available nowadays, but I keep it installed because it's stock, and I can't find an adapter for the wiring (I don't want to cut and hack the factory wiring either).

ASC probably stands for active sound control, which adjusts the volume according to the speed of the car ( there is a connector to the speedometer for that purpose). If your car does not have the connector to the speedo, the thing could be just cycling and searching for it.
to shut it off, depress the CD button until the ASC is no longer displayed; to turn it back on, reverse the process.
Dunno about the CD player, but there are posts here on the bboard re an upgrade/ rebuild on the SC 815s for a cd problem which was cured when they brought out the SC 816. Might be worth seeing what yours is worth to the dealer on a trade for a rebuilt 815 or 816.

ASC does stand for active sound control--I found this out in an owner's manual from a `96; I own a `94 854T with the same unit.

Does anybody know what year they started connecting the ASC so it would function? I can turn my ASC on and off, but am not sure if it's broken or just not available in the `94 model year car.

Thanks for the heads up about CD-Rs. I experienced this problem yesterday and thought it was a unique problem to my unit.

Dunno when Volvo first started offering ASC equipped radios, but the upper trim-level models had the ASC wiring to the speedo as early as 1990, probably as early as 1988.
