What sits just below the alternator? 850

I'm having a problem with something, and I'm not quite sure what it is. It has a belt connected to it and it sits just below the alternator. The belt is wrapped around it, but sometimes it clicks on, then off. The belt continues to spin around it, so I'm led to believe its not actually connected, because when it stops spinning, the belt continues to spin. Any ideas?

Would bad operation of the AC compressor cause drivability problems?

Compressor is probably cycling on and off frequently due to low freon levels in system. You can just turn off the AC switch on instrument panel and this will take it out of action until recharged. The frequent cycling will cause some small variation in idle, as the compressor load is added and removed, and also as the system's automatic idle adjustment cuts in and out with compressor. On the whole, none of this would be something you would think of as a significant effect on the cars driveability.

          Freon Level 850

I feel kinda dumb for that one. I forgot that I had turned on the ac switch earlier and started freaking out at the noise. What would be the beginning of the procedure to raise the freon levels? My ac doesn't really work (probably why I forgot I had turned it on) could this be why?

          Thanks for the help!

            Freon Level 850

A/C problems are a major issue with 850s. Basically, they leak the
refrigerant. The way to start is a new charge with a dye pack added.
As the new charge leaks out the dye will leave a trace as to the
exact location of the problem (the dye is fluorescent). To do the
job right the refrigerant is removed and a precise measurement of
refrigerant is added back in and a pack of dye is added. In some
cases some lubrication oil is added. My local dealer runs a summer
special where they do this for $99 (talk about your volvo cash cow).

The other way is to buy a can of refrigerant and add it yourself.
This can work or it can cause problems if you add too much (the system
might over-pressure and in that case it opens a valve and vents out
everything and you start over). You have to make the call on
            this option.

You an search the archives (below, to the right) on "air conditioning"
and find dozens of threads on the topic.
