2000 S40 - Check Engine Light S40-V40

People,

I have a 2000 S40. I'm right at 30,500 miles. Last week, the Check Engine light came on on Thursday. Friday my (original equipment) battery finally went dead. I put a new battery in and it's running fine.

So, my questions:

1) Does a low battery trigger the check engine light?
2) Is the check engine light on because 30,000 miles is some sort of milestone?
3) Is there some way for me to find out what is causing the check engine signal and can I possibly reset it?

Any information or advice you folks could share would be incredibly helpful.

Thanks in advance!

- Harold

Just go to Autozone. They will pull the code and reset the check engine light for free. They provide this service because if the code says you need new spark plugs or an O2 sensor, well you get the picture. ;) That will tell you for sure if it was the battery that set it off.

Some 00's and 01's had overly sensitive settings in the software and do require a software update. If this is your first CEL at 30,000mi that should be unlikely but if it comes back, have the dealer do the upgrade.

Harold, if you are new to Volvo and have just had your 1st Check engine light, 1. Welcome to the club! 2.No, there is no legal way to shut off! It's the whole EPA thing...! 3. Causes and fixes! Basically, the darn thing is too sensative and any of a dozen+ things can set it off, from dirt in fuel system, to not screwing on you gas cap correctly. You need to have the dealer hoo you car up to the....(Don't know how to spell it/someone will correct me!!!) Vantis???? machine that reads the Chk/engine codes. Mine went off 3-4 times at about the same milage as yours...what the dealer finally did was to do a Check engine (Software update!!!!) Fixed! I have 90k, hasn't been on in about 55k! Just my opinion...but I would get a software upgrade!!!! Hope this helps, Bill

I recently went to Auto Zone with a check engine lite problem on my '00 S-40. The code said I needed a camshaft position sensor. Can't find one anywhere. Any ideas short of going to the dealer??????
