Windscreen part of S70's structural integrity - means dealer change only?

A number of postings below made me think. If indeed the S70's windscreen and rear window are bonded to the body with special adhesive to increase its structural integrity, then a change of windshield using the standard method would decrease the structural integrity.

In that case likely one really should have any change of windshield or rear window peformed by a Volvo dealer.

Any thoughts on this?

TIA,

R

- means ANY good auto glass company

What do ALL dealer do? They call a local auto glass place and a guy comes out and does the job in the parking lot (or indoors if winter and cold out).

I know as I've worked in dealers since the dawn of time and that's what they all do, no matter who made the car.
You should be given the option of OEM vs aftermarket glass too.

It then could be done at your house or place of employment too, depending on the glass company. Those guys do that for a living.

My thought is the windshield is a structural member on most cars, not
just Volvos. A good shop should know what they are doing and should be
able to do the job correctly. Delaers probably send it out (and they
know who the good shops are). As I understand it, the process of
installation is important for a good bond. The windshield has to be
very clean (no human fingerprints on it) and there are probably
temperature requirements, etc. (I guess the manufactures of the
bonding agents call all of this out).

I'd stay away from the ones that do it in your driveway -- I'm not sure
how they can control temperature, cleanleness, etc. to the same extent
as an indoor shop could.

There was a news report on this problem a few years ago (sixty minutes?) and the reported problem was that not all of the glass shops followed the correct installation procedures and there was footage showing that the roof caved in when it was not bonded correctly. NTSB should have some information/recommended procedures on this. Make sure that the glass shop you use follows the correct installation procedures.
