OBD II Reader

Has anyone tried the Laptop code reader discussed at http://obddiagnostics.com/index.html? The developer lets you download the laptop software free and posts the wiring diagram for anyone that wants to make their own laptop-OBD II interface, or sells them assembled (without any warranty) for about $80. Appears to be a very sophisticated scanner with much information beyond just the scan-codes. [Someone posted this link on the Miati Forum; I have no affiliations with the developer.]

Sounded Interesting so I emailed him. See the response below.

    Cheers,

If the volvo is a USA version, it should work (diesels may have been exempt).
It will return any trouble code (whether generic or manufacturer specified)
for powertrain controllers. There may be manufacturer specific data other than
trouble codes which it will not retrieve, and it won't retrieve any data from
non-powertrain controllers, such as abs brake controllers, airbag controllers,
ride control systems, etc. It also will not reset the indicators for routine
service reminders, oil change indicators, etc.

Haven't heard of that before but I bought Alex Peper's hardware and it is nice. I'm still trying to figure out if his new Volvo support code (Beyond OBD 2) is going to do the extended function for me. The OBD 2 code works fine and I have used my laptop to read and clear codes. His site is.

      Larry,

I got Alex Peper's software also and it works very well. I thought I downloaded his extended Volvo program also but I don't see that it gives me any more info than before so possibly I didn't do something right. I'm a computer idiot.
