S40 idle problem S40-V40 2001

My '01 S40 T1.9 (78K miles) has an annoying miss (it's actually more like a
brief stumble) at idle - it'll idle smoothly after coming to a stop then
after about 10 seconds, the engine will start missing. The miss interval is
variable - sometimes 3 or 4 in quick succession and other times more spread
out. Most of my driving is around town but when I take for an run on the
interstate, the missing subsides for a short time. At speed there is no
roughness or missing, just at idle.

Any ideas where to start looking would be greatly appreciated.

Rob

    S40 idle problem S40-V40 2001

    Rob,

Simplest, cheapest, quickest to try to fix this is clean the throttle body with throttle body cleaner. I have a 2000 S40 and need to perform this at least once a year to clean off the throttle plate of carbon buildup.

Follow the directions on the can and use THROTTLE BODY CLEANER not carburator cleaner.

That little bit of carbon buildup causes the plate to not close completely thus inducing a rough idle.

    Good luck

    Miker

      Miker,

Thanks for the tip - someone else seconded your suggestion but added that it might be a dirty injector - I figured I'd go with the easiest solution first and try some injector cleaner. One can of BG44K seems to have cleared up my idle problem. At my next service, I'll ask about a throttle body cleaning.

      Thanks again for your suggestion.

      Rob
