T6 Newbie Question..... comments welcome S80 2004

Hi all, I'm a newbie here =) Got few quick questions regarding the '04 T6. Thanks in advance for any comments.

I'm really interested in getting a S80 T6 but kindda scared by the cost of maintaince. I never owned a car with turbo(s). Compare with a 2.9, will it cost a lot more to keep the T6 happy?

A friend told me that turbo cars "NEED" synthetic oil. Is this true for T6? Is there anything I should be aware of before getting a turbo car?

Thanks again =)

The turbo(s) are one of the more reliable components on a Volvo.
The turbo's are more reliable then the electronics, transmission,
and air conditioning (and many other parts). So, you don't really
need to worry about the turbo any more then any other part (and maybe
    even less).

Compared to a non-turbo the cost of ownership will be very close
with variations from car-to-car being more important then turbo
vs. non-turbo. By car-to-car I mean some cars have more problems
then others and so it is hard to predict exact costs for a specific
car; but for the general case, a turbo and non-turbo model will
cost about the same to maintain.

And yes, synthetic oil is a very good idea with a turbo since the
oil passes through the turbo and the extra heat is handled well by
synthetics. Also, I belive synthetic oils are less likely to
"coke" and leave deposits on bearings (such as the turbo's bearings).

      T6 Newbie Question..... comments welcome S80 2004

Thank you Thank you for the comments. Now I feel more comfortable with Volvo's turbos =)

One more question...or should I say it's a "myth". Do turbos tend to "lose" power as they age? I know all engines may lose a bit power as they get old, but turbos age MUCH faster. I heard turbos start to get weak after 2-3 years (from new). Is this true?

Many thanks for comments =) =)

The turbos in Volvos are basically reliable. Absolutely use synthetic oil, your engine will thank you.

One thing you will notice with a turbo is the boost provided absolutely relates to ambient temperature. The hotter it is, the less boost you'll have. With cold, dense air (more oxygen molecules per unit volume), you get more boost/power.

Thank you Thank you for the suggestions.

I don't have much knowledge on car mechanics. Thank you for the info regarding turbo boost vs. temperature. I'm in TX. The temperature here gets over 100 degree very often in the summer (plus the high humidity). The turbo probably would lose quite a bit of boost in the summer time =( =(

...just wondering...the spec says the engine is 268 HP and 280 lb of torque. I wonder what temp this is performed, since the turbo boost is affected by the temp.

I think what happens is over time you get used to the car and
it no longer "feels as fast". If it feels slow, just drive it
real mellow for a couple of weeks (hard to do) then step on it
in week 3 for that new car feeling.

I agree with Ray. Synthetics are a good idea in general, but especially in a turbo. The driving enjoyment of the turbo far outweighs any marginal cost difference.

        T6 Newbie Question..... comments welcome S80 2004

Thank you Thank you Thank you. I did more research on turbos today. Looks like the oil that turbos use = engine oil.

Do turbos shorten the life of the engines? Since the cylinders are getting compressed air, that means the cylinders are getting more stress. That leads to short engine life, right?

Why does Volvo want to use turbos to increase HP? Why doesn't Volvo increase the engine displacement instead? Nissan's 3.5L V6 has a 260-280 HP output (depends on model). Volvo has a 2.9L Turbo with 268HP. (I know I'm comparing apples to oranges, sorry) Both engines have similar MPG and HP output, but Volvo's turbo engine requires more care (synthetic oil). Also, from previous post, looks like the output from turbo engines depends on outsid temperature more than non-turbo engines. Is the use of turbo kindda like an inexpensive way to increase HP....with the trade off of adding more stress to the engine?

Do turbos shorten the life of the engine? I don't know- nobody has ever worn out one of these engines. Seriously, the engine in these Volvo's is probably the strongest part of the car. I don't believe that this is a serious concern and bought the turbo myself (S70)when I had to choose.

Why a turbo versus something like Nissan's V6? You need to look at other specs besides HP. For example, Volvo engines are torque monsters and this is what moves the vehicle. The Nissan Maxima engine has 265HP and 255lb-ft of torque, while the T6 engine has 268HP and 280lb-ft of torque. Other considerations include fuel economy, size, weight, etc. I haven't done a compare of these two engines, but to satisfy curiosity you may want to. Turbo's also have a very distinct advantage at higher altitudes, which explains why it was a popular option in WWII aircraft. This is not new or boutique technology.

Plus, you can more easily further enhance the performance of a turbo engine. With IPDs ECU and exhaust you can quite easily bump that T6 up to 280HP and 300lb-ft of torque if you are so inclined.

Thanks again, Ted. Now I feel much more comfortable getting a car with turbos =) Just test drove T6 one more time. All I can say is "WOW" what a sweet ride it is =) =)
