854 Steering Woes 850 1993

After a 600 or so mile trip, I started to notice my steering feeling tight in places, namely immediately left and right of center. Once I move the wheel past that point, it loosens up again, until it gets around roughly to the same place. Could this be a strut issue, or am I looking at a new rack/pinion/both? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I had similar problem, steering would be tighter in the middle of a turn, both right and left turns.
Called my volvo tech, he suggested apply w-40 to lower steering universal joint, located in front of fire wall behind the engine.
I did and all is well now, he said it is temporary fix. Hope it helps.

Its the universal joint on the steering column. Its situated just above the steering rack (outside). It will only get worse. Its made of an alloy & over time the grease inside evaporates. The best fix is to replace the joint. Parts should be about $100 give or take. Sometimes you can DYI, but a lift makes it easier. My garage charged me parts only replace it since they were already there to do the rear seal change anyway.
