Air pump question V70-XC70 1998

How difficult is it to replace the air pump ?

Mine went again, 2nd time. First time covered under warranty.

I see at volvospeed.com there are very good instructions but a few questions.

1 - He mentions "dykes" as a tool what exactly is this tool tin snips ?

2 - He was vague about the relay on 1998 models. Is there a relay and is it where the pump is located ?

3 - On my last service for the air pump it listed a "check valve" is this the same as the SAS valve ?

According to volvospeed they came out with a new SAS valve that was supposed to fix this problem. Apparently not enough.

Thanks for your help.

The air pump is an easy job. Just make sure you have a 10mm stubby wrench. The craftsman one is fine.

    Go to Volvospeed.com ... click on "repairs/maintenance" ... enter bay13's area ...
click on "engine" ... click on "air pump"

The job should take about an hour.

    Air pump question V70-XC70 1998

Welcome to the club. I went through two of these already. The first was under warranty. The second was last spring due to failed bearings. Just this past winter it froze up again with only a few drops of water in a bad location. I have now drilled holes in the bottom of the housing to prevent this from happening again. My checkvalve works fine and has been replaced. This is just a poor design and will haunt all of us who have these pumps until the day we sell our cars (and by Subaru WRXs :} ?!

Try removing the pump as per volvospeed info and running it. CEL sets if pump does not run but it may be caused by a freeze up. If the pump still runs, change the valve (SAS) and drill a 1/8 dia hole in the pump for a drain. Also check volvospeed board as there was an interesting discussion about installing an aftermarket pump that goes for $60 and fixes the problem.

jen - my 1998 V70R AWD has been through an airpump replacement. High highway miles has since solved this problem, maybe... I could NOT locate the Volvospeed article with a 'search' regarding V70 airpump maintenance. Please e-mail more info.

    Ray-
Not a hard job at all, I completed it in a little over an hour using Volvospeed's guide and photos. The hardest thing for me was getting to the bolts on the flange of the Check Valve. I have huge hands which always make engine compartment repairs interesting! Ended up basically laying across engine to get the right angle to reach the bolts. I did not replace the relay, mine was a bad bearing due to water intrusion.

1,Dykes are diagonal wire cutters shorter than snips.
2, On early models the relay was mounted on the airpump braket .I think in '97 it was moved up (unkown location)
3 Check valve is SAS valve

Dykes are just wire cutters at least where I'm from.
