Research-used car S80

I am thinking of buying my first Volvo. A 2000 S80 with fairly low miles. I love the style and safety, but am not versed on maintenance. Do you find maintenance to be esp. expensive on this Volvo (i.e., like servicing a Mercedes or a Land Rover), is the car reliable (I commute 20 miles each way), any other things I should think about before buying???

Some independent Volvo shops can now service a 2000 S80 T6 because they have the computer interface and software that Volvo provides.

I found that most repairs require that you go to a dealer where the labor rates are very high. Also the downloads are from the dealer so there is a motivation to go to the dealer for the scheduled maintainence. The scheduled maintenance from the dealer is expensive.

Oil,brakes, and engine/transmission/pwr steering flushes I got at an independent shop.

I purchased an aftermarket warranty from WarrantybyNet. They covered a throttle body replacement and a shifter solenoid and ball joint repair.I think that the aftermarket warranty (to 100K mi) will save you money if the transmission goes or if you get two or more $1000 repair bills.

I've gotten cars in college for free that were dramatically more reliable that my S80. The quality of the parts, the design, and the build are simply dreadful. The cost of maintenance is outrageous. Just say no.

What model car are you driving now?

Bought the 1999 2.9 - best car I ever owned (and I've owned a lot!). Have had very few problems and nothing that ever cost me anything to fix. I don't find the maintenance too expensive at all. At the advice of all the other "talkers" (they criticize it, but don't own it) I bought the extended warranty which has now run 1.5 years with no claim . . . Fred

      Great info--thanks.
Dumb question--do I have the option of buying an extended warranty on a 2000 S80 (40,000 miles)--if so, how much does it cost, is it a goood investment?

Go to your newsstand, buy the April 'Annual Auto Issue' of Consumer Reports for $4.99 (US) and turn to page 81. S80

    Do you feel lucky?

    I'm definitely NOT lucky, that's why I drive a Volvo, albeit a V70 with a cloth seats and a stick shift. If I were lucky, I'd drive a Harley-Davidson!)

    ..RUN!!! S80

High costly maintenance, frequent problems....yes, like MB, BMW, Jag, Land Rover and it'll be at your dealership often draining your pocketbook. Dependable? NO!

There ARE better cars out there, like older RWD Volvos for example.

        . funny! S80

Hahaha!!! You sir are a comedian!
Tell ya what....go to ANY Volvo dealer and ask ANY Volvo tech how wealthy they've become thanks to early S80s (warranty or not).
They're now rolling in dough, seriously. Thank you Volvo! Cha-ching!!!!
