Tires/Wheels/Shock Replacement Suggestions V70-XC70 1998

Just purchased a very clean '98 V70 Base with 53K mi. Love everything about the car save for the infamous rough ride. Currently running on newish but cheap "Negotiator" tires (60R15's made in Indonesia), stock alloys and original shocks. Any advise on tire and/or shock replacements would be much appreciated. Hoping to smooth the ride...

If you want a smoother ride, Boge Gas Turbo shocks/struts are great (there are a few other brands about the same - but NOT Bilstein HD). Might also get (if the car does not already have them) 15" wheels (These were standard on my 1999 V70 GLT). Less rubber between the wheels and the road, as with 16" and 17" wheels, means firmer, harsher ride. I really like the Michelin MV4 Plus tires. I've have them on my current Volvo (second set), and have had them in the past on an 850 and a VW Passat. Great tire with excellent wet and dry capabilities. A little expensive though at $120/130. Dunlap A2 Sports are also good, I tried them once, but will not last long.

Be advised that my comments are for those who want a great but not too firm/harsh ride and still with excellent handling. Those who want real performance cornering, etc., would have other recommendations.

i have a 98 v70 t5m and yes they do ride stiff. i chose to replace with bistein touring shox and struts (better warranty and the struts are gas filled not sure if boges struts are.) do not expect a huge difference no matter what you do.you will not soften the ride appreciably

Tough to get the T5's to ride smooth, but the base or GLT's can ride nice. Our 99 V70 GLT with 15-inch wheels, Boge gas touring shocks & struts rides very nice. I once test drove an 850 HP turbo wagon and did not like the ride at all, very rough.

anyone know where to get the Bilstein's cheaper than IPD? Our 98 V70-t5 rides consistently rough over broken pavement. Since we're still on the tires that came with it [LeMans HR - no clue who makes them] and what appear to be standard shocks/struts, I'd like to upgrade this summer. Having driven until 3 weeks ago a VW GTI-VR6 that was lowered, had strut brace, upgraded sway bars and Bilstein HD's, I've become somewhat accustomed to the harsher ride. However handling was awesome and I'd like to improve the handling of this car [only had it since last Nov. 03].

          Suggestions, comments or experiences?

Thanks for all the helpful info... I'll definitely look into the Boge/Michelin combo. Thanks again... former 544 & 122 owner
