98 V70R Engine Rough V70-XC70 1998

A previous message indicated a problem with a 98 V70 R in that the engine, at idle or in drive, 'coughed' or seemed to be trying to quit. I have the same problem. Every two or three days, most noticeable while idling, the engine shudders badly for just a second, as if starved for fuel or not getting spark. My mechanic cannot figure it out and the Volvo dealership knows of no bulletins relating to this problem. There feels like an electrical problem, and the last message indicated it was maybe a software glitch. Does anybody out there know any more about this?? Thanks.

I had a similar problem with my 98V70R. There was a software upgrade to fix it which the dealer installed free of charge. This upgrade was done a long time ago (1999 or 2000) so maybe the dealers have forgotten about it since most would have been upgraded long ago.

Is there a check engine light no, almost sounds like your ECU is in the "limp home mode" If a sensor or component is bad the ECU nearly shuts the engine down inorder to protect it. OBD2 scanner can read any pending codes. Had a bad O2 sensor on my 99 C70 - seemed like there was water in the gas, would run rough and not idle well. Replaced the O2 sensor and reset the ECU - like new now. Similar occurance on my 89 760 when the CAT went bad - no check engine lights but car went into the "lmp home mode" Good luck

My 98 R also............... V70-XC70 1998

does the same dam thing about once every 3 or 4 days when sitting at a light. It goes miss..miss.miss.....then all is fine. Never when I am under load. From previous posts looooooooooooong ago I read it was a software update. Since I never use those "crooks" at the volvo dealers for any service I just live with it!
