strut replacement 850

Folks,

Bushing on my pass strut making an awful squeeking/clunking noise. Looking to replace both struts, but what parts do I need? Strut Assembly, bushing mounts ($120!) and bushings? Is the mount reusable? Thanks

Chances are the struts are ok. It's the spring seats that are the cause of the clunking noise. It looks like a big rubber pancake that has a metal spacer in the center. The rubber is fused to the metal spacer and with time they separate from a constant turning motion. Someone suggested that you bounce the front end and listen.

If a strut breaks, you would see hydrolic fluid on the inside of your tire(s). But, I'll bet it's the spring seats.

Replaced the stuts and the spring seats at the same time.

My mechanic in Fountain Valley, CA. did the job for $480. He used the OEM Boge struts.

It feels better than brand new!

It is probably the strut mount needs replacing. how does the top mount look from inside the engine compartment? I replaced mine last year. Needed a spring compressor (rent from Auto zone for free)

If you push down on the front end you can see/hear the mount squeeking. Seems to be just the rubber bushing. I have 120k on the car and it seems like a logical time to replace the struts. The mount is 120 bucks and wondering if I can recycle it and buy new struts and bushings? Any advice would be great. Thanks

I had the same symptom last year on my '94 855T. My Indy told me the struts were fine and so he only did the mount and bushing. All's been quiet ever since.

I just did struts (and shocks) last fall. On the struts, the parts consist of mount, bushing, strut and lower mounting hardware. It would be silly to not replace the bushings (also called spring seats), do that. I polled for recommendations and decided as long as the strut was off, I'd replace the mounts too, even though they weren't broken. You can get them for $75 each at fcpgroton (see below). I did not replace the mounting hardware. these links are useful:

        front struts:
        http://members.shaw.ca/heeeeee/strut/
but beware he reversed the part numbers for strut-to-steering-knuckle nuts and strut-upper-mounting nuts.

        rear shocks:
        http://www.volvospeed.com/volvo_performance.php
then scroll down to "Bilstein shocks" link. The rears are really easy but this was useful.

Haynes manual was useful but has some extraneous stuff about spacers that didn't exist on my car. It is necessary to do a wheel alignment when finished because the strut upper mounting nuts are adjustable (sliding mounts).

cheapest parts, plus they are useful phone consultants (like IPD without the hype):
        http://fcpgroton.com/

Dogma on replacement suspension parts, softest to firmest:
Sachs OEM < Boge < Bilstein "touring" = "economy" < Koni < Bilstein Heavy Duty

        good luck
